Salford's Housing Allocations Policy Review Consultation

Introduction

The Housing Act 1996 requires a local housing authority to have a scheme, which sets out how housing is allocated within their area and how applicants on the housing register are prioritised.

Salford’s existing Allocations Policy has been in place since March 2019 and lasted for five years. The Council needs to ensure that the Policy remains relevant and best reflects national policy, local needs and trends, so it’s time to review and produce a new policy for 2025.

We have used the responses from the first public consultation held in February 2024, along with feedback from our key stakeholders/partners to draft some potential changes to the policy – which we would now like your comments and views on.

We hope that this survey will give you the opportunity to provide your views to influence the development of a new Allocation’s Policy for Salford. Your responses will remain confidential.

This survey will close on Friday 6 December 2024.

Background

The demand and need for affordable housing far out strips the availability of those homes in Salford. The system used to deliver Salford’s Allocation Policy is called Salford Home Search. In the 12 months of 2023, there were only 965 properties advertised via Salford Home Search. However, each day there are around 5000 active applications registered (in total) on Salford Home Search in need of accommodation. We need to ensure that affordable accommodation is accessed by those in most housing need.
